I feel like I've been beaten up, my leatherwork is turning mouldy, my latchets should be dry by December, my gun looks like it went down with the Mary Rose, I think I am developing pneumonia, and trench foot. I have sunburn, I am hoarse from singing in the beertent, I missed a junction on the motorway on the way home, and had to make a long detour, my authy tent will be drying for months. I drank far, far too much. I will be eternally grateful to the young girl who had to put ketchup on my burger after watching me struggle for several minutes ( I was to drunk to work out how to flip the lid up...) It was great to catch up with people, and enjoy the great British weather. What a FANTASTIC weekend!

Yes, Its funny how the rain alters a muster. Lots of difficlties from the six and a half hour journey up, to other things thrown up by the organisation such as no commentary for the 'army' events taking place in the living history area. The actual encampment was superb, and we got lots of compliments for the various displays of crafts, weaponry, and scenes od domestic life. Cameos (and they were good) were stolen from the main actors, by the little kids drafted in at short notice. Jackie was again superb in her introduction to the assembly for the courts leet and her address at the end to the Jury.
Did not get over to plastic much, but it was the same mud for us, which I guess is a good old Glastonbury badge of achievement. Glad the rain held off just enough to give us a dry pack up. Got home in much better time.

Yes, it was the best and worst of SK weekends.
The less said about Sunday's weather, the better, twenty-five hours rain. Swampy, Cris and Jessica had a bad time as they couldn't get on the campsite for nearly the whole of Sunday when they arrived, and then ended up near the Forlorn Hope - and it was worse for poor old Vaughans', whose tents got washed out and thus had to leave early. At least Saturday and Monday were fine.
The Living History displays were very good - John & Patricia's 'church' tent, Jeff and Caroline's tent, and Ken and Karen Daniels' setup - the 'Dancing Pig'. The stew on Saturday was great, and those of you who missed the pea and ham pottage on Sunday missed a rare treat. Mike Arnold and family were there manning his bookstall and we even managed to get him into kit on Monday!
It was also good to see Andy (Hallam) back in kit after his rotten year.
Battlefield was a bit tight, and Andy (Webb), I am sure, will tell you that there were a few raised eyebrows upon seeing the musket ranges. I would be surprised if the artillery got off more than a few shots. There was a good pyro moment when a charge went up at the edge of the wood, bits of branch went skywards and a cloud of leaves floated across the battlefield.
Sunday's battle, when we in the Pike were fighting on our own as opposed to being blocked-in with Bluecoats, was a cracking good day's fighting. Gells, who outnumbered us, and obviously had the better of us for much of the time, asked me to pass on their congratulations for a good scrap. Another Northern Association pike commander told me that his unit all watched us, nine -strong including officers, crash through 15-man Manchesters, and cheered us on! I thought I had a lot of bruises but that was nothing compared with Rachel's... And hope Kenny's shoulder get batter and that Nigel will be able to walk properly this week.
Can't wait for Glynde, when we can have our own block for the whole weekend. Hopefully we'll have a lot of our 'regulars' with us for then...

yes it was a great weekend despite all the rain on sunday, we left our little tent in the skip cos it leaked like a sieve and the zip on the door broke, I had to wrap the bed up in an emergency blanket to keep it dryish and thank goodness I packed all the clothes in waterproof bags.
The tavern went down well with the public, Ken did an amazing job of keeping the fire going in the rain so I could still cook and my bread/meteorite was a great talking point. Having the extra day either side made life a bit easier too.
Kenny's shoulder is ok, bit sore still but thats to be expected, the SK medics are amazing, watching them put everything back in place was great. he will live to fight another day.
cant wait for Glynde

Sunday morning was not a nice time to have spent my first night under under proper canvas since I was in the scouts. At least the inside of our tent was dry in the important places. Not warm, but dry. Yes, keeping the fire going was full time job on Sunday. We made a broth from the leftover bacon joint we had on Saturday. The meteoric bread looked very good (apart from the charcoaly bits) - we had sour dough bread that caroline made on Friday. Must remember tea bags next time.! Did photos on the field on the other two days - sunday had been going to be my musket day. Piccies are on view at jeff.vincents.org.uk/archives/sk/newstead-abbey-june-2012 .

Regarding the stray dog, I heard a member of the public ask if anyone had lost a black and white dog because she had seen it wandering around the wooded area near the house. It had no collar. I believe this was on Monday. She was going to let the staff in the house know.
