Many of you will be interested in the recent development in non military coordination within the Sealed Knot as a whole, which will be announced at the Army Council on Saturday.
David Wallington has been appointed to the role of Commissary General, and I attach his message which explains it.
" Hello everyone
I am sure that many of you have seen the missive sent out by the Lord Generalles regarding the appointment of a SPOC (Single Point of Contact) for the NMP (Non Military Personnel). (For those who have not, I have attached it as a Word document) and are wondering what this is all about. I hope the note below at least sets out the basics?
I am delighted that Simon and Ritchie have asked me to take on the role of SPOC on behalf of both Armies and to give formal representation of your activities at the performance committee. Without a doubt this is long overdue as all of you are a vital part of the Society’s performance and without your performances, the Society would be a much poorer place. The role was entitled SPOC as a working name, as I am not a ‘Trekkie’ (and we wished something more authentic) I am delighted and amused that the Lord Generalles' have settled on the title of Commissary General. A further task at some point will be to find a better term than NMP?
This role of Commissary General is a completely new role as it is designed to encompass all the non-military activities which we demonstrate in view of the public. The list of NMP groups is already long and I am sure there are more that either already exist, or will come forward over time. My role is to represent you all and co-ordinate where appropriate to ensure that the Society performs to its full potential at all times.
Please don’t be alarmed at the creation of this role or my appointment. There are no ulterior motives in play and there is no desire to ‘command’ in the military sense. As you will see from the Lord Generals’ attached note, the desire is purely performance driven. As for me, read on... Many of you will already know me, some better than others. I hope those who do will please excuse the potted history and indeed recognise it!?
I have been a ‘Knotter’ for a little over 33 years and have been a member of Charles Gerard’s regiment throughout that time. My background is military from Pikeman, through the ranks, to CO and to my last role as Officer Commanding the Marquess of Newcastle’s Tercio for 7 years. I have also organised and assisted in organising many musters. In ‘real life’ I head up the commercial team of the UKs biggest passenger train operator, so life is seldom dull! Finally, I am called David, and I answer to Dave, but due to Gerard’s Welsh history, I am generally known in the SK as Dai. (Oi You! also works well)
The roles of regimental CO and Tercio OC over the last 20 years, as well as muster organising, has led to much contact with the civilian side of the Society’s performance, but I have never personally indulged, except for some cameo appearances! I am aware of most of what you all do, but not all, and certainly in no detail. Therefore, it is a steep learning curve for me over the next year, to get to understand the detail of your performance and consequently the ‘offer’, to our muster organisers and customers.
From the above, it should be obvious that I have no links with any of the groups (formal and informal) that make up the Non-Military Personnel and therefore no ‘hidden agendas’ or partisan views. What I do bring to the party is considerable experience in working with a big SK team, good communication skills, a working knowledge of the Performance Committee (and it’s members!) and a respected voice(?). I also bring a listening head and a desire to do what is best for ALL involved, so it is important that we communicate regularly.
Over the next year, as well as getting to know you all, I hope to get together some sort of structure to ensure we can get the best out of everyone for the good of everyone. This will inevitably mean that this role will change both its remit and terms of reference, which you will help shape. Please, don’t be ‘backwards in coming forward’ if you have good ideas how to make this work for the better and ensure that you get sensible support, direction and co-ordination in the future.
For those of you attending the Army Council at Witney on Saturday, I will be there and hope to meet as many of you as possible. I will say a ‘hello’ at the civilian meeting and I have a 5-minute slot in the main meeting to explain all the above! Please come and say hello at any point during the day and I will try the same, but one word of warning, I might not recognise some of the front of house ‘characters’ in 21st century clothing!
Yours in Your cause
